Bolivia, June-July 2003

On the way to South America. We weren't really supposed to be flying on this airline... Charles Bronson's brother drove us to Chile from Tacna, Peru. Arica, Chile. The Hotel Mar Azul, Arica.

Scenic Putre, Chile. Downtown Putre. Lauca National Park, Chile. The volcano Parinacota. This walk was tough, after only one day at 4000 meters above sea level.

Downtown Parinacota, Chile. Former residents of Parinacota. In the hills outside of Putre. Rush hour in Putre. Waiting for the bus to Bolivia.

Ahhhh, the Hostal Republica, La Paz. Downtown, La Paz. Shopping for provisions in La Paz. Mercedes and family. Chacaltaya, Bolivia.

Relaxing on the summit of Chacaltaya -- 5395 meters above sea level. Down to the Chacaltaya hut. Loading up the mules for the trek into Condoriri base camp. On the trail. Resting.

Up over the pass into the Condoriri basin. Hector the muleteer. Base camp. The view from the tent. Up the glacier.

Rest day. Our water supply. On the trail up to Pico Austria. At the pass below Pico Austria. Tomas at the pass, hiding from the wind.

Trucha Frita. Local transport in Sorata. Sorata, Bolivia. On the trail into the mountains above Sorata. Tomas with the guides.

Another attempt to climb Piramido Blanco in the Condoriri region. Tomas on steep snow. Me trailing behind on the glacier. Me leading the final pitch of rock. On the summit of Piramido Blanco, 5250 meters.

Tomas on the summit. Now the real adventure begins -- getting home now that the airline we flew down on is no more...
